Joseph Sciammarella, MD, FACP, FACEP
Medical Director
Dr. Sciammarella is the Medical Director of the American Heart Association Training Center at Mercy Medical Center. He has been an American Heart Association ACLS Instructor since 1981. He has served the Heart Association as National Faculty for ACLS, Regional Faculty for ACLS, BLS and PALS, has served as the Regional Chairman of Operation Heartbeat, and as a spokesperson for the Regional AHA.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American Board of Emergency Medicine and practiced Emergency Medicine for 19 years.
Dr. Sciammarella has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Suffolk County Affiliate of the American Heart Association, is past Chair of the Health-Site Task Force, former Chair of the Emergency Cardiac Care Committee, and past Co-Chair of the ACLS Committee. He has also served as a member of the New York State Affiliate’s Health Site Task Force.
From 1989-1994 Dr. Sciammarella served as full-time Medical Director of
the Suffolk County, NY EMS System, where he initiated the Police-AED program, the first such program in NY state.
Dr. Sciammarella was an Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook. He co-chaired the EMS Committee of the New York State Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, served on the EMS Committee of the Medical Society of the State of New York, and is former Chairman of the Suffolk County Regional EMS Council. In 1990 he was awarded the New York State EMS Council’s EMS Educator of Excellence award.
Dr. Sciammarella is recognized as a national authority on AED programs. He has lectured at international Emergency Cardiac Care conferences on the topic, and served as a member of the Police AED Issues Forum for the National Center for Early Defibrillation. He is a co-author of the position paper authored by this group. He is also the author of the chapters on CPR and Automated External Defibrillators for e-medicine’s on-line Family Medicine textbook.
Dr. Sciammarella is also a Major in the Medical Corps of the United States Army Reserve, assigned to the 344th Combat Support Hospital at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He served as Senior Battalion Surgeon in Afghanistan in 2006 with the 10th Mountain Division as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Major Sciammarella teaches ACLS to Medics from
the 10th Mountain Division in Musa Q’Alat, Afghanistan.
This was the first and only ACLS course taught in 25 years
while armed with a 9mm handgun!
